The University of Northern British Columbia invites applications for a Tenure-Track position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a proposed starting date of July 1st, 2021. The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Mathematics or a closely related field by the date of the appointment or shortly thereafter. While outstanding applications from all areas of mathematics are welcome, preference may be given to applicants with publications in an area that complements the Department’s strengths. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and will be able to teach all levels of Mathematics courses. They will work closely with members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to foster a strong culture of academic excellence. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of academic scholarship, and will be expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program that includes supervision of graduate students. As a member of the Department they will be a dynamic and passionate educator with a clear vision of how their teaching philosophy enriches the Department’s curriculum. Finally, as a member of the Department and the newly established Faculty of Science and Engineering, the successful candidate will be able to excel in the teaching, research, and service relationships found in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment.

The UNBC Department of Mathematics and Statistics d­elivers courses to support a Major in Mathematics, Joint-Major in Mathematics with other Sciences, a Minor in Mathematics, a Minor in Statistics, and a Master of Science in Mathematics, as well as service teaching for other disciplines. An important feature of the Mathematics degree program is the early emphasis on the development of abstract reasoning and the relation of the abstract to the concrete. The degree requirements have been chosen so as to provide students with a broad background in mathematics and statistics while still leaving them room to pursue their individual interests. The Department works closely with the Academic Success Centre and students have the opportunity to lead tutorials, to tutor, and to develop teaching skills.

The Department offers a vibrant research environment and is an affiliate member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences. We are also close to the Banff International Research Station. These opportunities promote collaboration with other departments in the mathematical sciences and facilitate hosting high profile research events and programmes.
