The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a proposed starting date of July 1, 2024. The successful candidate will specialize in areas such as analysis and applied mathematics, computational mathematics. Experience in machine learning, or data science will be considered an asset. The ideal candidate will be equipped to contribute to academic programs in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, and Data Science. Moreover, they should be interested in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations, allowing for seamless work with colleagues across the diverse research avenues present within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the larger UNBC community.
Key responsibilities include:
- Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; and
- Establishing a research program that attracts external funding, relevant to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Prospective candidates should demonstrate significant potential in both research and teaching. Essential qualities also encompass robust interpersonal and communication skills. These attributes might be evidenced by items such as a teaching statement, records of effective teaching, a well-thought-out research plan, and a history of receiving research grants and scholarships, commensurate with their career stage.
The selected individual will be entrusted with teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate Mathematics courses. This includes courses that support the Civil and Environmental Engineering programs. There’s also an exciting opportunity to contribute to the creation of a new Data Science stream at UNBC, and to play a significant role in influencing the future of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNBC. The teaching load is typically two courses each semester.
Lastly, it’s vital for the successful candidate to actively participate in the department’s ongoing initiatives towards equity, diversity, and inclusion, and will also be expected to engage in service roles benefiting both the department and the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

It includes a satellite campus in the coastal community of Prince Rupert.

The salary for this position will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant qualifications and experience as per the UNBC Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The annual salary range for this position is expected to be from $ 84,637 to $122,736. Please refer to the link below to the Collective Agreement (Article 48) for more compensation information:
